Our Mission
1. Enhance senior services by partnering with existing government and non-government support services, developing services that are lacking, and using Jemez Community Center in Canon, the library, local publications, houses of worship, and social media to raise awareness among community members about available services.
2. Link people to existing services and advocate for their expansion, as needed.
3. Promote senior wellness by providing excellent and accessible resources that improve the quality of life for seniors, their caregivers, and the community.
4. Innovate to address the changing needs of elders in the Jemez Valley and Mountains, pursuing creative solutions, partnerships, funding, and a means of communicating.
Jemez Aging in Place Board Members
Dee Plana
After growing up in Los Alamos and spending 30 plus years in the Dallas area working and raising 3 daughters, Dee and her husband, Miguel, settled in Jemez Springs. Dee believes the ability to live in Jemez Springs is a gift which she doesn't take for granted. She is involved in Jemez Aging in Place to allow for us all to continue enjoying that gift as long as possible. Dee would like to encourage everyone to keep moving as we Age in Place. In line with that philosophy, you can find her out hiking, bike riding or running as she and Miguel continue to explore.
Pamela Cornell
Pamela was finally able to live in Jemez Springs full-time in 2011. Born in Indiana, and then moving to Michigan for more than a decade, living in the canyon was like moving to another planet. Everything was different. What grabbed her most was the beauty. The beauty of the place and the people. Jemez Springs is a community and she is happy and proud to be a part of it. In her life, before living in NM, she was a special ed teacher, secondary school administrator, central office administrator and college instructor. Life is a journey and being part of JAIP is another step along the way!
Susanna Cooper
Susanna moved to the Jemez in 1992 for the beauty, outdoor opportunities, and a job as Counselor in the schools here, which she loved. She only left to marry and move to Maine, but then she and James both came back, retired, for the same beauty, hiking and skiing, and to be a part of this wonderful community where there’s plenty to do to make a contribution. Jemez Aging in Place is her idea of how we can make life in the Jemez easier, safer, more caring, and more fun for seniors who live here. Oh, and she also loves rocks and trees — and there are plenty of amazing specimens in the Jemez to keep her happy!
Karen Menczer
After living in many US states and several countries, Karen and her husband Ron decided it was time to move to a place they wanted to stay in and grow old in. They chose Jemez because it has everything (except a lap pool) that they wanted, but most of all, it has a great community of people. Ron grows grapes, blackberries, raspberries and plays the piano. Karen runs her international animal welfare non-profit, while also working in biodiversity conservation. They are inspired by the beauty and the people they've met in the Jemez. "Jemez Aging in Place is so important for people like us - who want to remain in this area and also remain active in mind and body."
