Fall prevention guidance for older adults to commemorate Adult Falls Prevention Week September 18-24

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) and Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) join thousands of community-based organizations nationwide for Falls Prevention Awareness Week, September 18-24, 2022, to provide prevention tools. “One fall can change your life, particularly if you’re an older adult because, one fall can increase risk of hospitalization in older adults by 25 percent,” said David R. Scrase, M.D., acting DOH secretary. “Prevention efforts are key to maintaining quality of life for older adults and one easy proactive item a person can do -- is to talk to their healthcare provider and find a good balance and exercise program.” READ MORE & ACCESS VALUABLE FALL PREVENTION TOOLS HERE.

FOR YOUR HEALTH

Here are some resources for financial assistance for hearing aids:

New Mexico resource:  https://www.cdhh.nm.gov/

General Resources:  https://www.hearingloss.org/hearing-help/financial-assistance/

Also there is a pocket talker device available for checkout from the Jemez Springs library's "Library of Things". It works well for lectures or meetings, or at home if one person needs the TV louder than another or for places with too much background noise. It can be used by putting the mic at the source you want to hear and wearing the headphone. This one is wired, and has about a 10' cord. They are selling for about $155 online now (search "pocket talker") if you want your own - they have wireless versions as well.

If you're looking for an assisted living situation, check out this website! They put together a lot of good information about how to find and choose a good resource and to help you ask the questions you'll want to ask. You'll find a directory of assisted living facilities in NM, options for financial assistance, and a lot more:
